It wasn’t just that a neighbour once got rushed into hospital, whilst cleaning, from inhaling too much bleach. It preceded that. For a long time I’ve disliked cleaning products. The natural progression away from your average cleaning product, was onto the ‘natural’ cleaning products, which for some reason, were twice the price! This disgruntled me even more! Yet at this point, I felt trapped between a rock and a hard place. Feelings of guilt when I bought the ‘poison’ products and feelings of guilt when i bought the expensive ‘is this really worth it’ products.
So, when I met someone who introduced me to essential oils, I suddenly realised I could make a powerful antibacterial spray, with just a couple of ingredients. Vinegar, water, essential oil/s of choice!
The two oils I was initially encouraged to use were Tea Tree and Lavender.
Tea Tree oil comes from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia tree of Australia and has historically been used by the Aboriginal people as an antiseptic and herbal medicine. It is now well known as an antibacterial, anti fungal oil. Lavender, more well known, is from the flower spikes of certain types of Lavender plants and was known to be used 2500 years ago, in the Mummification processes of Ancient Eyypt. Lavender has antibacterial and antifungal properties, along with being a soothing and relaxing scent.
So here you go…
- Source your essential oils. I buy mine at ‘NIKURA’, which have their own website, or you can find them on Amazon.
- Find a spray bottle. One day, i’ll buy one of those fancy metal bottles, but for now, just find a cheap bottle, or empty and clean one you already have.
- Fill the bottle just under half way with white vinegar (you can find white vinegar for around 30p in the supermarket and one bottle of vinegar will probably fill your spray bottle three times!!). I’ve used apple cidar vinegar in the picture above. That is not necessary. I only used it because I had no white vinegar, which is much cheaper.
- Add around 10 drops of each essential oil. Or to your preferred scent.
- A-spray you go!
Once you start looking at the array of oils and the properties they have, you will be quite literally amazed.
I would recommend getting a beginners guide to essential oils to learn where you can and can’t use them. Essential oils are extremely concentrated so in most situations should be diluted or used with a carrier oil, which will stop stinging on the skin (unless you are allergic to any type-always do a spot check first) however will also make them go further for you. Some should never be ingested and i’d pretty much say they all should be kept far away from children.
